Books

Ok, so I'm going to make a confession - I'm totally ADDICTED  to.....BOOKS!!!

Reading is definately one of my favorite pastimes - winter or summer, couch or sunbed...if there is no book around I'm not perfectly happy.
And since I'm so addicted to books I've decided to share the books I've read and my thoughts about them with you - so be prepared... (at least for a really long, continuously longer growing, list of titles) ;)

Rubinrot. Liebe geht durch alle Zeiten - Book 1 of the Ruby Red trilogy (Kerstin Gier)

Gwendolyn Sheperd is a normal 16 year old teenager (apart from the fact that she can see ghosts and talk to them) living with her mother and siblings, her aunt, cousin and grandma in London. Everything is about her cousin Charlotte because she is special - she inherited a gene that allows her to travel trough time - at least that is what everybody thinking.
The chaos is perfect when it turns out that not Charlotte but Gwendolyn inherited the gene. Now she has to cope with not only her everyday life but also with the fact that she knows nothing about the way a young woman is supposed to behave in the past - she never learned to fence, ride a horse or the fine art of behaving like a lady. Additionally, she is not really sure whom she can trust and who tries to use her for their own purposes.
And, above all, there is her fellow time traveller - Gideon - who is really hot but a little arrogant.

I almost read the book in one go and really enjoyed it. And since it is written from a first-person perspective I was able to really get into the character of Gwendolyn. The story is funny and exciting.

Happy Family (David Safier)

The Wünschmann family is not really a happy family. Mother Emma owns a small bookstore for children's books but it is not really thriving. Her marriage with Frank is also reduced to the minimum because he is overworked and constantly tired. The two children, Fee and Max,  have problems of their own. Fee is under the threat of repeating class and also facing major boy trouble. Max is bullied by a girl at school.
One day Emma's former classmate visits her bookstore and brags about her perfect life and how she works with VIP's such as Stephenie Meyer. She invites Emma and her family to a  reading and  hints that it might be a costume party. Emma, delighted to have a chance to show how great her life is, gets costumes for her family and drags them to the reading. Unfortunately the monster family - a vampire, Frankenstein's monster, a mummy and a werewolf - are the only guests in costume.
Frustrated they leave the reading early and get in a big argument on their way home. Almost crashing the car they stop and find an old woman who seems completely strange. This woman turns out to be a witch and curses the family and vanishes. All of a sudden they are real monsters which definately complicates things.
On their quest to find the witch and lift the curse they start out for Transilvania and so far got into a fight with a gang of bikers, found and lost the witch and Emma is courted by Vlad Tepes, the REAL count Dracula, which doesn't sit well with Frank(enstein's monster).

Happy Family is my first book by David Safier. It took me a while to get my hands on one of his books but after countless suggestions I started on Happy Family. It is definately a funny read and shows that being a family isn't easy at all. ;)

The Single Girl's To-Do List (Lindsey Kelk)

Right from the title you can definately conclude one thing - this book is obviously a typical example for Chick-Lit (you know, the typical girl's stuff).

It starts with the main character Rachel Summers, a make-up artist living in London, being dumped by her long-term boyfriend Simon. Her two best friends Emilie and Matthew (NEVER Matt) immediately come to her rescue and a sunday at the pub results in a monstrous hangover the next day and a To-Do list written on a napkin to help Rachel get used to the life as a singleton. Strictly following her list Rachel starts out to change her life completely starting with chopping off her mass of long blond hair and becoming a redhead.
Changing her haircolor is just the beginning. Rachel learns to be herself and to take risks. She does things she das never done before and becomes really independent.
By the end of the book Rachel has become a completely new person and has a new boyfriend, who actually was sort of waiting for her for several years.

The book is definately a page-turner and written in a light and funny way :D It is easy to empathize with Rachel. At the same time she is to admire for her courage to go trough with ALL the points on the To-Do list.

Nemesis (Wolfgang Hohlbein) - 6 volumes

Nemesis by Wolfgang Hohlbein is a complete series of fantasy novels consisting of 6 volumes:
1.) Die Zeit vor Mitternacht
2.) Geisterstunde
3.) Alptraumzeit
4.) In dunkelster Nacht
5.) Die Stunde des Wolfes
6.) Morgengrauen

The story is told from the POV of Frank Gorresberg who comes to Crailsfelden to come into an inheritance. Upon his arrival he meets his "competitors" (Ellen, Judith, Maria, Stefan and Ed) - the will states that there can only be two heirs. Just before the lawyer can tell them about the rules of the will he dies. Frank believes he saw the lawyer's head exploding but Ellen, who is a doctor, states that the cause of death was an aneurysm. Carl, the landlord, takes them up to the castle of Crailsfelden where the group is supposed to stay for the night. Here Von Thun (the supposed assistant of the dead lawyer) tells them that only those two will inherit all the money who marry and produce a healthy child. After moving into their rooms Frank hooks up with Judith.
When he awakes later that night Judith is gone and so is everybody else. He finds them in the kitchen where they start talking and various character traits are revealed. After an accident the group is trapped in the castle with no way to communicate with the world outside.
During the night the group discovers the horrible secret of castle Craisfelden and the fact that a killer is stalking them. Suspicion and fear are mixed with memories of the past and while the group shrinks they learn that history is  not always restricted to the past. By the end of the night there are only two survivors who have to keep silent about the incidents at the castle for the rest of their lives.

I really enjoyed Nemesis and although I'm used to Hohlbein's style of writing (he is one of my favorite Fantasy authors) it took me a while to find out about the connections of the storylines. Actually it took me until I was almost finished with book 5 but then I was able to predict the end but it didn't matter - I loved the story anyway. Although I have to admit it was a little bit creepy... ;)

House of night (P.C. Cast/Kristin Cast) - 11 volumes so far

House of Night is a novel series by P.C. and Kristin Cast and consists of 11 volumes (more to come) and 3 novellas (more to come) - more information on the series  <here>

novels novellas
1. ) Marked Dragon's oath
2.) Betrayed Lenobia's vow
3.) Chosen Neferet's curse
4.) Untamed Kalona's fall (not published yet)
5.) Hunted
6.) Tempted
7.) Burned
8.) Awakened
9.) Destined
10.) Hidden
11.) Revealed
12.) Redeemed (not published yet)

The novels follow Zoey Redbird who is marked to undergo the "change" and become a vampire at the age of 16. After entering the Tulsa House of Night, a sort of boarding school for fledlings (children who are marked to become vampires) she makes new friends and discovers her goddess-given power to control all five elements (earth, air, water, fire, spirit). In the course of the novels she finds out that the highpriestess Neferet (the "headmistress" of the House of Night) has turned evil and fights her with her friends loosing dear friends and family in the course. Whether or not she will succeed and survive remains to be seen because the series is not complete yet.

I simply LOVE the HoN-series! Not only for the new turn the authors take on the whole vampire-idea but also for the "normalness" they manage to weave into the story. Apart from being the most gifted and powerful fledling on earth Zoey is a normal girl who has to cope with the typical teenage-trouble - think boyfriends, hormons, tempers, bitching, body issues. I just CAN'T WAIT for the last installment of the series which will be released in October this year!!!!

 Vampire Diaries (Lisa J. Smith)

Some of you might have already heard about the novel series written by Lisa J. Smith or its adaption into a TV series starring Nina Dobrev, Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley.

The Vampire Diaries Series The Vampire Diaries: The Return Trilogy
1.) The Awakening 1.) The Return: Nightfall
2.) The Struggle 2.) The Return: Shadow Souls
3.) The Fury 3.) The Return: Midnight
4.) Dark Reunion

The story evolves around Elena Gilbert, a high school girl, and Stefan Salvatore, a vampire who comes back to his hometown Fell's Church. They fall in love and it does not take long until evil raises its ugly head. Additionally, Stefans brother Damon enters the stage and tries to win Elena's heart. Not enough with this love triangle there are still Elena's ex-boyfriend Matt and Katherine, the woman who turned Stefan and Damon into vampires, to consider. Against this background Elena, Stefan and Damon have to save Fell's Church more than once and the last book The Return: Midnight ends with Damon sacrificing his life to save Elena and his brother.

Those of you who checked the bookstores or already know the series might say that there are more books following those 7. That is true but they were written by another author and a ghostwriter and are (in my opinion) not as good as those by Lisa J. Smith - that is why I don't consider them part of the series. And since Lisa has announced just this Month (January 2014) that she is planning on picking up on the series again but not as books but as fanfiction - I'm really curious what she is up to :D
